Why does a narcissist thrive on conflict?

Conflict is a natural part of human interaction, but for a narcissist, it takes on a whole new meaning. In fact, conflict seems to be a driving force in their lives, something they actively seek out and even thrive on. But why is this the case? What fuels a narcissist’s need for conflict?

One of the main reasons why a narcissist thrives on conflict is their insatiable need for attention and validation. They crave the spotlight and will go to great lengths to be the center of attention. Conflict allows them to achieve this, as it creates a situation where all eyes are on them. Whether it’s engaging in arguments or stirring up drama, a narcissist feels alive and significant when they’re at the center of conflict. Any attention is good attention in the mind of a narcissist.

Additionally, conflict provides a narcissist with a sense of power and control. They enjoy the feeling of superiority that comes from overpowering others in arguments or manipulating situations to their advantage. Conflict allows them to exert their dominance and reaffirm their belief that they are superior to everyone else. It becomes a way for them to validate their inflated sense of self-importance.

Furthermore, a narcissist thrives on conflict because it allows them to deflect attention away from their own shortcomings and insecurities. By engaging in conflicts, they can shift the focus onto others and avoid taking responsibility for their own actions. It becomes a way for them to protect their fragile ego and maintain their self-image as flawless and faultless.

Interestingly, conflict also acts as a channel through which a narcissist fulfills their craving for emotional excitement. They derive pleasure from the surge of adrenaline that accompanies heated confrontations and the ensuing emotional tumult. It grants them a feeling of exhilaration and vivacity. Without conflict, a narcissist may feel bored and unfulfilled, as they constantly need that emotional high to sustain their self-esteem.

Lastly, conflict allows a narcissist to assert their dominance and establish their superiority over others. They thrive on the power dynamics that come with conflict, using it as a tool to manipulate and control those around them. By instigating conflicts, they create a sense of chaos and confusion, making it easier for them to manipulate others to get what they want.

Conflict is like fuel to a narcissist’s fire. It feeds their insatiable need for attention, validation, power, and control. It allows them to deflect attention away from their own shortcomings and insecurities while providing them with the emotional stimulation they crave. For a narcissist, conflict is not just a natural part of life, it is a necessary ingredient for their sense of self-worth and superiority.
